Sisters of the Daughters of Mary congregation as part of their philanthropic activities started the
'Home for the Aged' at Pilankalai in the year 1992.
In the ever increasing deprivation of aged people due to various changes occurring in the institution of family,
quite a number of poor old people are struggling for their survival. Their total dependence push them out in to
loneliness and lack basic living conditions.
Seeing the pathetic state of these old people, particularly the women, the religious sisters came forward to
provide food and accommodation; love and care; healing and hope through their Home for the Aged. As an extension
of the house, a small unit consisting 25 women stay at Mathar and function well.
The sisters through their frequent house visits, regular interaction and powerful awareness creation,
make their families and society more responsible to the vulnerable suffering people. While rendering
dignified burial to the dead, special care has been taken to integrate the old women with their own families.
It is encouraging that there are people who respond to this call positively. Drawing inspiration from the words of
Jesus, said in Mt 25: 35-36, these people are cared and treated with utmost love.
